Mandera Green Future has a strategic approach to addressing multiple socio-economic and environmental priorities simultaneously, leveraging synergies between different goals and maximizing the program’s impact and sustainability.
Mandera Green Future programme is an environmental initiative that addresses multiple socio-economic and environmental priorities simultaneously: employment, protection of road reserves, climate change mitigation, and urban beautification.
As the drone camera goes airborne and sends footage down from the sky, you cannot help but marvel at the lush vegetation. Trees, in their majestic flair, wallow in the wind as if making a celebratory dance.
The project was started in July 2016 by the former Governor of Mandera Ibrahim Ali Roba. Hon. Mohamed Adan Khalif, the current Governor of Mandera County continued with the project that has seen 250,000 trees planted as of May 2024.
Extensive lands were destroyed by the arrival of asylum seekers from neighbouring Somalia. We started the afforestation project to conserve and restore the environment, combat wind and soil erosion, reduce the impact of climate change, and regenerate the natural water cycle.
In Mandera County, we just don’t plant trees. We also ensure they survive. We have identified tree species that can thrive in the local temperature and tolerate climate extremes like drought and flash floods. The trees are cared for by women who water, mulch, weed and protect the trees from pests and animals.
Educate residents of our Municipality about the importance of urban greening, environmental conservation, and sustainable living practices through public awareness campaigns, and community outreach initiatives.
Students participate in tree-planting activities within the school compound and surrounding areas. They learn practical skills in tree management, planting techniques, and tree care under the guidance of program staff and teachers.
The County has constructed 90 water storage tanks which are either underground or elevated. The water is used by the ‘Green Army’ to take care of the trees. Each tank can store up to 15,000 litres of water.
As active participants and leaders, women serve as role models, inspiring others, especially young girls, to engage in environmental stewardship and advocate for sustainable practices for future generations.
The following are some of our achievements experinced in the Greening Program
Our program is a holistic response to Mandera’s unique environmental and socio-economic circumstances. It involves systematic tree planting, nurturing, and the establishment of critical water infrastructure to support sustainable forest growth.
